What San Jose Homeowners Need to Know
San Jose Has Both Drywood AND Subterranean Termites
The Bay Area is unusual in having significant pressure from both drywood termites (which live entirely within wood and don’t require soil contact) and subterranean termites (which build mud tubes from the soil). Drywood termites require different treatment methods from subterranean — fumigation (tenting) is the standard treatment for drywood infestations, while subterranean termites are treated with soil barrier treatments or Sentricon bait systems. A proper inspection will identify which type you’re dealing with.
Argentine Ant Super-Colonies Are a Bay Area-Specific Problem
The Argentine ant, an invasive species, has formed a single super-colony that spans much of coastal California — including all of the Bay Area. These ants are extraordinarily persistent because they don’t fight each other and can re-colonise treated areas rapidly. Standard perimeter sprays provide limited lasting control. Bait-based treatments that spread through the colony are more effective for Argentine ant management.
